Taqwa must be shown through daily repentance
“The best of those sinners are those who make tawbah.”
The khutbah argues that taqwa must be demonstrated through sincere repentance, beautiful character, disciplined Jumu'ah practice, and protective guidance for one's family.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Continues a hadith-based discussion of taqwa, repentance, and good character.
- Presents tawbah as the first station of the journey to Allah and urges frequent seeking of forgiveness.
- Explains the Qur'anic traits of the righteous: generosity, anger control, forgiveness, and self-correction.
- Connects beautiful character with emulating the Prophet and attaining closeness to him in the Hereafter.
- Gives practical Jumu'ah guidance: arrive early, sit forward, remain disciplined, and avoid speaking or using phones.
- Warns families about Halloween influences, then closes with prayers, schedule changes, and community announcements.
In the khateeb's words
“The best of those sinners are those who make tawbah.”
“Some of us do that to our spouses. Some of us do that to our children. Some of us do that to our brothers and sisters.”
“The one who is more deserving to be closer to me in that day of judgment, in my Majlis, is the one who had beautiful characteristics.”
“Discipline is essential in our deen. Everything in our deen is about discipline.”
For the dinner table
The khateeb reminded us that awareness of Allah should show in our character: being generous, controlling our anger, forgiving others, and speaking kindly. We all make mistakes, but Allah is merciful, and we should keep returning to Him with sincere repentance and follow bad deeds with good ones. He encouraged us to learn from the Prophet’s beautiful character and work on our own behavior every day. He also asked us to care for our Jumu'ah by arriving early, filling the front rows, listening carefully, and putting our phones away. In his closing reminder about Halloween, he urged parents to guide their children peacefully through social pressure while holding to their faith. Together, we can choose one small change this week that puts these reminders into practice.
- What is one kind action you could do after making a mistake?
- When you feel angry, what helps you pause before saying something hurtful?
- What could we do together before next Jumu'ah to make listening easier?
