Purify the nafs before it controls you

“If you do not control it, it will control you.”

The khateeb, at 10:55

The khutbah teaches that the nafs, the soul-self guiding the body, is vulnerable to desire and Shaytan, so believers must control and purify it through obedience to Allah.

For the dinner table

Today's khutbah explained that a person has a body and a soul, and that the nafs is the inner force guiding the body. The nafs can be pulled by desires, surroundings, bad company, and Shaytan, so we must stay alert and ask Allah for protection. When we feel regret after sin or happiness after good, that conscience is a sign of faith and a chance to improve. If we keep ignoring it, the heart can harden; if we listen, the nafs can be trained to obey Allah. We can start by praying on time, reading Qur'an, remembering Allah, doing good to family and neighbors, and avoiding what Allah forbids.

  1. When did your conscience recently remind you to choose a better action?
  2. Which habit from the khutbah could help you guide your nafs this week?
  3. How can our family respond when someone feels regret after doing wrong?
