Ramadan calls us to purify the soul

“Ramadhan comes to teach us to search in the most effective place possible.”

The khateeb, at 6:36

In one sentence

During Ramadan’s last ten nights, the most meaningful search is inward: purifying the nafs, practicing self-accountability, and turning devotedly to Allah in preparation for uncertainty and the Hereafter.

The khutbah in 5 steps

  1. Frames Ramadan and Laylat al-Qadr as opportunities for acceptance, guidance, and transformation.
  2. Urges listeners to search inward through i'tikaf and purification of the nafs rather than merely chasing signs of Laylat al-Qadr.
  3. Uses mortality, the grave, worldly possessions, and Judgment imagery to redirect attention toward righteous deeds.
  4. Presents Ramadan as month-long muhasabah, renewed longing for Allah, and preparation for hardship.
  5. Closes by calling for dedicated worship, repentance, divine acceptance, and a good ending.
Try this week
Use the last ten nights for intentional spiritual focus and inward searching, not only for identifying Laylat al-Qadr’s signs.
Practice muhasabah by examining what you say and do and what may return to haunt you.
Dedicate yourself to worship in Ramadan and beyond across family life, friendships, conflicts, desires, and daily conduct.
Turn to Allah through yearning and dua for purification, acceptance, and a good ending.
Know Allah in ease so you can rely on Him during hardship.

For the dinner table

The khutbah reminds us that Ramadan is a time to search honestly within ourselves. Instead of focusing only on discovering Laylat al-Qadr, we should ask whether our hearts and actions are becoming cleaner. We should repair family relationships, avoid wrongdoing, and give more attention to worship and righteous deeds. Because life and the future are uncertain, learning to rely on Allah during ease prepares us for difficulty. We can end Ramadan by asking Allah for forgiveness, acceptance, and a beautiful ending.
