Seek knowledge with faith and character
Muslim students should pursue beneficial knowledge as an act of worship, grounding every field in faith, pure intention, and respectful character so it benefits themselves and others.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Connects the new school year with Islam’s broader purpose for seeking knowledge beyond grades, careers, or money.
- Explains the first revelation, “Iqra,” and Allah’s teaching of humanity through knowledge.
- Urges students to connect every academic field with faith and remember Allah while learning.
- Encourages asking Allah for beneficial knowledge and using one’s talents to benefit others.
- Emphasizes that knowledge must accompany faith, good character, respect for parents, teachers, elders, and the community.
- Concludes with hadith about pursuing knowledge as a path to Jannah and calls for sincere intentions.
In the khateeb's words
“He should remember that Allah is the one who gave humanity the ability to learn.”
“Ya Allah, increase me in knowledge that benefit me and benefit others and the community people.”
For the dinner table
Imam Muhammad Kamruzzaman reminded us that a new school year is not only about grades, university, careers, or money. In Islam, learning can be an act of worship when we remember Allah, seek beneficial knowledge, and keep a sincere intention. He connected this lesson to the first revelation and to the prayer asking Allah to increase us in knowledge. He also taught that knowledge should make us respectful and kind to parents, teachers, elders, and the wider community. We should use what we learn to benefit ourselves and others, hoping that the path of learning brings us closer to Jannah.
- What are you learning that could help someone else?
- How can you remember Allah during your schoolwork this week?
- What respectful action can you take toward a parent, teacher, or elder?
