Act when Allah’s guidance becomes clear

“Once you know this is from Allah, do not delay.”

The khateeb, at 31:23

In one sentence

The khutbah argues that once Allah’s guidance becomes clear, believers should act immediately rather than procrastinate, keeping worldly possessions as tools rather than objects of devotion.

The khutbah in 6 steps

  1. Opens with Gaza and a hadith about Muslim weakness caused by attachment to worldly life and fear of death.
  2. Contrasts worldly attachment with keeping the dunya in one’s hand, measuring honor by taqwa.
  3. Contrasts the believer’s response of hearing and obeying with procrastination and excuses.
  4. Illustrates immediate obedience through alcohol prohibition, the change of qiblah, and the khimar command.
  5. Uses the three who stayed behind at Tabuk to show that procrastination brings consequences, though honesty can lead to forgiveness.
  6. Applies the lesson to Covid and Gaza, closing with a call to act immediately and prayers for the oppressed.

For the dinner table

Today’s reminder was about not postponing what we know Allah asks of us. The speaker said worldly things should stay in our hands as tools, not settle in our hearts as masters. He pointed to the companions who immediately gave up alcohol, turned toward the new qiblah, and found ways to follow the khimar command. We should be honest about our excuses, take one faithful step now, and remember people suffering in Gaza and elsewhere in our duas.

  1. What is one good thing you have been postponing that you could begin today?
  2. How can money, talents, or possessions be used as tools to help others?
  3. What helps you notice when an excuse is keeping you from doing what is right?
