Wisdom means seeing the bigger picture
“We must stay bonded in a bigger picture way to succeed.”
Muslims should cultivate basira, deep, spiritually grounded reflection on history, current events, relationships, and collective problems, so they can move beyond narrow reactions toward wise reform and effective service.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Examines election perspectives and the importance of understanding policies, funding, and influence
- Introduces Qur'anic reflection and basira as an antidote to narrow-mindedness
- Identifies ignorance, selfishness, and rigid personal opinions as signs of narrow vision
- Applies big-picture thinking to families, mosques, workplaces, and leadership roles
- Calls for strategic, long-term communal responses to Palestine and other crises
- Concludes with Qur'anic encouragement toward striving, self-change, reform, and sincere prayer
In the khateeb's words
“If you're not well read on history and current events as a Muslim, then it doesn't matter how much knowledge of Islam that you have, you're gonna have the narrow-minded approach of how to apply Islam.”
“It's about gaining peace and perspective of the bigger picture that Allah has commanded families, whether it be familial through blood or through religion, we must stay bonded in a bigger picture way to succeed.”
“Everybody has a role to play. Everybody has a responsibility. And there's always gonna be times when somebody's better positioned.”
For the dinner table
Imam John Ederer reminds us that our lives are blessings from Allah, and that gratitude includes thinking carefully about how we live. He encourages us to learn from the Qur'an and the Prophet's example while also understanding the world around us. Seeing the bigger picture means looking beyond our first feelings, asking questions, and being willing to grow. In our families, it means remembering that everyone makes mistakes and working to understand and repair conflict instead of keeping score. We each have something to contribute, and we can seek Allah's guidance as we improve ourselves and help one another succeed.
- What could you ask someone to understand their side of a disagreement better?
- When has learning something new changed your first impression?
- What strength could you use this week to help our family or someone at school?
