Hardship can deepen faith and humility
“Putting us through test and trial humbles us, makes us humble that yes, we are dependent on you.”
Muslims should understand present hardships as tests that cultivate humility and steadfast faith, responding through worship, patience, unity, compassionate outreach, good character, and responsible community action.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Introduces Hajj and Eid al-Adha, explaining Qurbani’s spiritual meaning, animal requirements, and benefit to food banks.
- Connects modern illness, inflation, severe weather, misinformation, and war with prophetic warnings about increasing trials.
- Uses Qur’anic passages and hadith to explain that tests distinguish sincere faith, cultivate humility, and require patience.
- Uses Musa’s supplication and the examples of prophets to explain delayed answers to dua and the severity of tests.
- Calls for unity, stronger worship, welcoming and teaching new Muslims, and da'wah through wisdom and good character.
- Urges honesty in daily life, caution with AI messages, civic advocacy for community rights, and increased ibadah and dua.
In the khateeb's words
“only Allah takes you to Kaaba whether it's Hajj or Umrah only He can make things easily to go”
“Allah by giving us, putting us through test and trial humbles us, makes us humble that yes, we are dependent on you.”
“When they are in a masjid, we are not really providing the politeness and softness to talk to them, to make them feel part of belonging, part of the community.”
For the dinner table
The khateeb reminded us that hardship can test our faith and deepen our humility and dependence on Allah. He encouraged us to keep making dua in everyday life, as well as when we are struggling, and to remain patient while waiting for relief. He also spoke about sharing Qurbani meat through local food banks to help people facing hunger. He asked the community to welcome new Muslims with kindness and help them learn and feel that they belong. Through honest words, polite behavior, and care for others, we can show the beauty of Islam in our daily lives.
- What is something you would like to make dua about today?
- How could you help someone new feel included at the masjid or school?
- What could we share this week with someone who needs support?
