Fear Allah, not people, in crisis
“Don't make that fear from humans become a barrier between you and Allah.”
In times of intimidation and crisis, believers should fear Allah rather than people, strengthen faith through practice and remembrance, and remain connected to truth, justice, and community.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Opens with Quranic guidance not to fear the Shaytan’s allies, using the post-Uhud context.
- Retells the believers’ response after Uhud and explains that trials distinguish sincere faith.
- Applies the message to discrimination, hateful rhetoric, insecurity, and fear in America.
- Identifies fear tactics, dependence on worldly means, powerful people, and algorithm-driven negativity.
- Urges Quran, dhikr, worship, and community connection to restore peace and courage.
- Concludes with Khalid ibn al-Walid’s deathbed example and a call to steadfast reliance on Allah.
In the khateeb's words
“don't make that fear from humans become a barrier between you and Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala”
“what you have is just information until you put it into practice”
“get out of the social media get out of this bad news”
“the heart that is filled with Allah cannot be filled with people or the fearful people”
For the dinner table
The khutbah teaches that fear can pull believers away from truth, justice, and community. In moments of intimidation, we should fear Allah most, remember that provision and destiny are in His hands, and not let threats control us. Strong faith is shown by practicing what we know, especially when life is hard, and by keeping up prayer, Quran, dhikr, and worship. We should also step back from online negativity, seek good people, and stay united. A heart filled with remembrance of Allah can meet frightening times with peace and courage.
- What fear feels biggest to you right now, and what could help you respond with faith?
- Which good habit would you like to strengthen this week: Quran, dhikr, prayer, or less negative news?
- Who are the supportive people we can seek out in our community?
