Worldly education needs Islamic knowledge
“It is only your light that you carry into the day of judgment that will show you the path.”
In one sentence
As children return to school, Muslim families must balance worldly education (information) with Islamic knowledge (light/nur), because only the light of deen will guide a person on the Day of Judgment.
The khutbah in 7 steps
- Opening reflection: yesterday's smog and the Friday gathering as reminders that the Day of Judgment will occur on a Friday
- The inevitability of death, this life will end just as summer vacation ends, a fact even an atheist cannot deny
- Knowledge as light (nur) versus mere information/theory, and the need to balance the two in schooling and careers
- The Buraq story from Isra wal-Mi'raj: the Prophet tied his conveyance to teach us to use the means (asbab) Allah provides
- Parents' responsibility for tarbiyah: a person is on the religion of his friends, so befriend others with the intention of conveying deen
- Guard your eyes to sharpen the mind, Imam Shafi'i's complaint to his teacher Waki' about weak memory and the command to leave sin
- Closing announcements: maktab and school programs, marriage-preparation workshop, donations
Try this week
Bring young children to the masjid from an early age so they return to it as they grow older
Pray Dhuhr (and other salah) on time at school before the time expires
Model salah as parents, stop and pray on road trips or at the mall rather than delaying it
Guard your eyes, including from phones and iPads under the blanket at night
Preferably send children to Islamic schools or homeschool them; otherwise stay deliberate about their tarbiyah
Befriend non-Muslim classmates with the intention of displaying Prophetic character and conveying Islam
Enroll children in the masjid's maktab, after-school, hifz, Sunday school, and youth programs
Sources the khateeb cited
Quran 87:14-17'wal-akhiratu khayrun wa abqa', the Hereafter is better and everlasting, used to argue dunya is temporary and desires must be restrained
Quran 29:69Those who strive and sacrifice in Allah's path will be guided to many avenues of success
Quran 2:143Allah made the ummah a middle/moderate nation, neither extreme toward deen nor toward dunya
Quotes
In the khateeb's words
“it is only your light that you carry into the day of judgment that will show you the path that will show you that path towards jannatul firdaus inshaAllah”
“so if you have younger children and you want to see them strike the right balance between deen and dunya start bringing them to the house of Allah at an early age my dear friends do not see them as something insignificant”
“you cannot tell your child do what i tell you to do but don't do what i do”
“because the nur of Allah is not given to the sinner what is the nur of Allah the ilm the knowledge”
