Purifying the soul is a lifelong journey
“A servant is on a journey that never stops.”
Spiritual growth is a lifelong journey of purifying the soul through awakening, repentance, knowledge, patience, disciplined struggle, and truthfulness, ultimately seeking ihsan and Allah’s pleasure.
The khutbah in 7 steps
- Frames human life as a journey toward meeting Allah, with the soul as the vehicle.
- Introduces wakefulness, insight, self-accounting, humility, and lifelong repentance.
- Emphasizes beneficial knowledge of Allah and balancing love, fear, and hope.
- Explains patience in obedience, avoiding sin, and enduring hardship, leading to contentment with Allah’s decree.
- Recommends Qur’an reflection, avoiding heart-corruptors, and struggling beyond the comfort zone.
- Concludes with truthfulness, continual ascent or descent, and seeking ihsan, Paradise, and Allah’s pleasure.
- After prayer, two attendees publicly recite the shahada and are welcomed as Muslims.
In the khateeb's words
“Dear brothers and sisters, from the moment of birth, a servant is on a journey that never stops. And the destination of this journey is the meeting with the Creator, Allah, mighty and exalted.”
“Repentance, dear brothers and sisters, that we always hear is not merely seeking forgiveness with the tongue.”
“The heart journey into Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala is like a bird. Love is its head. Love is the head of that bird. While fear and hope are the two wings.”
For the dinner table
The khutbah reminded us that life is a journey toward meeting Allah, and our soul is the vehicle we are responsible for caring for. We grow by waking up from heedlessness, honestly examining ourselves, repenting sincerely, and learning about Allah. Love should guide us, while fear and hope give us balance, and patience helps us obey Allah and endure difficulties. We should reflect on the Qur’an, avoid habits that weaken the heart, and leave our comfort zones. The goal is to keep moving upward toward ihsan, Paradise, and Allah’s pleasure.
- What is one comfort-zone habit you could challenge this week?
- How can we show repentance through our actions, not only our words?
- What do love, fear, and hope each teach us about Allah?
