Seeking knowledge is an obligation
Islamic learning must be treated as a consistent, non-negotiable investment in ourselves and our children because genuine faith requires knowledge and action.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Reflect on whether the summer produced meaningful Islamic learning.
- Recall how structured Qur'an memorization and parental investment shaped the khateeb's foundation.
- Apply intentional scheduling, sacrifice, and consistency to Islamic education during the school year.
- Prioritize personal learning so parents can guide and protect their families.
- Contrast knowledge with wealth through Qur'anic reminders, poetry, and the story of Al-Mu'tasim.
- Define obligatory everyday knowledge and close with supplications for guidance and the oppressed.
In the khateeb's words
“However, you don't have a choice when it comes to memorizing the book of Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala.”
“Likewise, you have to place in their schedules a time, a dedicated time, for them to learn the religion of Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala.”
“He says and do not celebrate your wealth and be distracted from it. For true wealth is only that which you know.”
“I don't have to become a scholar, but these things which concern me, I have to learn about. Therefore, seeking knowledge is an obligation. It is not voluntary.”
For the dinner table
The khateeb asks families to look honestly at whether summer included meaningful Islamic learning. He shares that structured Qur'an memorization, supported by parents and teachers, gave him a foundation that lasted. As school and work schedules begin, he says Islamic education deserves its own regular time, effort, and financial investment. He reminds us that faith is not only a statement in the heart: we must learn prayer, transactions, zakah, and other matters that shape daily life, then act on what we learn. The goal is steady growth for ourselves and our children, with Allah's guidance.

- How could our family make Qur'an learning part of our weekly routine?
- Why might knowledge be more valuable than money?
