Revive your heart before it hardens

“The most important thing for you and I in this life is to develop our hearts.”

For the dinner table

Today the khateeb taught us that Allah gave every human being a soul and also desires, and that life in this world is a test of which one we follow. He explained that the heart is like the center of the body. When it is healthy through obeying Allah, worship starts to feel sweet instead of heavy, and sin leaves a dark spot on the heart that sincere tawbah can wipe away. He gave us four warning signs that a heart is growing weak: feeling nothing when we hear Allah's name or the Qur'an, loving only worldly fun, sin feeling normal, and not caring about other people's suffering. To bring the heart back to life, he gave us four steps: sincerely repent, keep a daily routine of good deeds like salah, dhikr and Qur'an, spend time with good friends who remind us of Allah, and remember that our time here is limited. In the other khutbah, the khateeb reminded us to always do our best and trust Allah with the results.

  1. What is one small good deed you could do every day this week to help keep your heart healthy?
  2. Who is a friend who helps you be a better person, and what do they do that makes a difference?
  3. How do you feel inside after you say sorry to Allah or to someone you hurt?
