Allah’s mercy stays open after repentance
“Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala's doors of mercy will be open.”
Allah’s mercy and forgiveness remain open to every sincere repentant person, who should leave sinful environments, seek sound guidance, and return repeatedly to Allah through repentance and good deeds.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Introduces Allah’s open mercy through the Quranic warning against despair.
- Retells the hadith of the man who killed 100 people and was accepted after sincere repentance.
- Draws lessons about avoiding despair, seeking knowledgeable guidance, and changing harmful environments.
- Emphasizes that repentance must be sincere rather than an excuse to continue sinning.
- Explains that seeking forgiveness brings spiritual renewal and worldly blessings.
- Concludes by urging immediate repentance and continued istighfar.
In the khateeb's words
“Do not fall for this trick of shaitan. Where he leads us down the path of despair.”
“If we fall short. Come back again. If we fall short. Come back again. No matter how many times.”
“Sincerely repent to Him. And Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala's doors of mercy will be open. For the things we need in this world as well.”
For the dinner table
Today the khateeb reminded us that Allah says: "Do not despair of the mercy of Allah, for He forgives all sins." He told the story of a man who had killed one hundred people. He sincerely repented and set out for a town of good people, but he died on the way. Allah made the land shrink and stretch so that he was closer to the good town by just one hand span, and the angels of mercy took him. We learned that the door of tawbah is always open, that shaitan tries to make us feel too dirty to come back to Allah, that good friends and good places make goodness easier, and that we should repent now because we don't know when our time will come. Every child of Adam makes mistakes, but the best of them are the ones who keep turning back to Allah, and He even blesses those who seek His forgiveness with good things in this life.
- Why do you think Allah made the land shrink so the man was closer to the good town by just one hand span?
- If a friend felt they had messed up too much to talk to Allah, what would you tell them?
- Which place or group of friends makes it easiest for you to do good, and why?
