Steadfast faith takes daily effort
“All we have to do is try.”
Istiqamah, steadfast, sincere, moderate adherence to the Quran, Sunnah, and Allah’s commands, is cultivated through consistency, repentance, community, and perseverance across every part of life.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Introduces istiqamah through the command to stand firm and Ibn Abbas’s advice.
- Defines istiqamah as keeping promises, following the straight path, practicing moderation, obeying Allah, and avoiding prohibitions.
- Presents Imam Muhasibi’s three supports: Quran, Sunnah, and community.
- Explains Ibn al-Qayyim’s five practices: sincerity, knowledge, Sunnah, ihsan, and avoiding sins.
- Uses examples of perseverance and Quranic promises of angelic reassurance and Paradise.
- Applies istiqamah to New Year’s resolutions and Islamic guidance in money, family, business, and daily life.
In the khateeb's words
“All we have to do is try. That's all you have to do. Just try your hardest. Keep trying.”
“And every time you fall. And every time you make a mistake. Get back up and keep trying.”
“Islam is a complete way of life. And it has guidelines for every single moment of life. Every single aspect of life.”
For the dinner table
Today’s khutbah focused on istiqamah, the steady effort to stay true to Allah. It means following the Quran and Sunnah, keeping our promises, avoiding what Allah has forbidden, and living with balance. The speaker reminded us that sincerity, learning, good company, repentance, and patience help us continue even after we slip. He also urged us to let Islam guide not only prayer and worship, but our money, family responsibilities, business, and treatment of other people. We can begin this year by choosing to keep trying, return to Allah when we make mistakes, and take one consistent step at a time.
- What does “keep trying” look like when you make a mistake?
- Where can our family practice honesty and fairness with money?
- How can the Quran, Sunnah, and mosque community help us stay on the straight path?
