Keep the masjid alive through learning
“I will teach you Quran on condition that you're willing to then teach others.”
The masjid should be rebuilt as a continuously active center of Qur’an learning, teaching, and da'wah, with the whole community sharing responsibility for keeping it populated.
The khutbah in 5 steps
- Describes the Prophet’s mosque as a lively center of remembrance, teaching, learning, and da'wah.
- Uses gatherings for Qur’an study and the Prophet’s preference for teaching circles to show the mosque’s educational role.
- Explains how new Muslims learned and returned to teach their communities, including Thumama’s transformation.
- Uses the Qur’anic principle that some believers should remain to learn and teach while others serve elsewhere.
- Invites the congregation to attend the open learning sessions, bring Qur’ans, learn, invite others, and teach in turn.
In the khateeb's words
“The masjid becomes the center of ta'leem of the community. The center of learning for young and old.”
“I have some free time, let me go sit for one hour in the masjid. Anyone that comes, I will teach them.”
“I will teach you Quran on condition that you're willing to then teach others.”
For the dinner table
The khutbah says that the Prophet’s mosque was not only a place to pray; it was a lively center where people remembered Allah, studied Qur’an, learned their religion, and taught others. This learning helped newcomers change and carry Islam back to their communities. The khateeb asks everyone to share responsibility by spending whatever time they can in the masjid, inviting people, and keeping learning going. He especially invites the community to attend the open sessions today and tomorrow with a Qur’an, and offers to teach those who will pass the learning on.
- What could our family learn together and then teach someone else?
- When could we make time to visit the masjid this week?
- How can we help a newcomer feel comfortable learning with us?
