Allah changes people who change themselves
“Adhering to the religion of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala is a cause of changing the condition of people.”
Allah changes a people’s condition when they change what is within themselves: faith, obedience, gratitude, and communal responsibility bring blessing, while disbelief, sin, ingratitude, and division bring loss and punishment.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Introduces the divine principle that Allah does not change a people’s condition until they change themselves.
- Shows how faith transformed the Muhajirun and Ansar from oppression and poverty to security, honor, and provision.
- Connects belief, God-consciousness, and steadfastness to blessings in rain, land, and livelihood.
- Explains the reverse pattern: disbelief, innovation, disobedience, ingratitude, and division lead from blessing to punishment.
- Illustrates the warning through the people of Sheba and the owner of the two gardens.
- Uses a hadith about correcting communal sin, then urges individuals, groups, and nations toward obedience and faith.
In the khateeb's words
“This dear brothers and sisters indicates that adhering to the religion of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala is a cause of changing the condition of people.”
“Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala will change his condition from the worst to the best whether he is an individual a group of people or a whole nation”
For the dinner table
The khutbah reminded us that lasting change begins with what is inside people, their faith, gratitude, choices, and obedience to Allah. The Muhajirun and Ansar moved from weakness and oppression to dignity after responding to Allah’s call, and they were reminded to be grateful for His help. The khateeb also warned that blessings can be lost when people replace gratitude with arrogance, disobedience, or carelessness, as illustrated by the people of Sheba and the owner of the two gardens. This principle applies to individuals, families, communities, and entire nations. We should therefore turn from heedlessness toward awareness, from wrongdoing toward obedience, and help one another make better choices.
- What is one good change you would like to begin within yourself this week?
- How can our family show Allah gratitude through actions, not only words?
- What is a kind way to help a friend who is making a harmful choice?
