Faith is built through character and example
“Iman is something that is built, not deconstructed.”
Muslims should let the purpose of seeking Allah's pleasure and worshipping Him shape their identity, pain response, and da'wah, especially the patient cultivation of family and community through knowledge, character, and example rather than debate or publicity.
The khutbah in 7 steps
- Contrasts purpose and identity, arguing that purpose must come first.
- Explains how gratitude and patience can turn blessings and pain into spiritual good.
- Uses Malcolm X to illustrate purpose reshaping identity and loyalty.
- Connects purpose-led identity to the ten traits in Qur'an 33:35 and the legacy people leave.
- Reorients da'wah toward teaching and cultivating Muslim children, youth, and community members.
- Rejects debate-centered and influencer-style outreach, emphasizing Quran, Sunnah, shared belief, and insight.
- Calls listeners to lead by example through prayer, mosque involvement, and regular youth engagement.
In the khateeb's words
“And we have to acknowledge that. Some pain cannot be fixed.”
“Iman is something that is built, not deconstructed. And when we see the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam building men and building women of character and Iman, we will get it.”
“most people are not interested in debate they are interested in an example to follow that teaches them godliness”
For the dinner table
The khutbah reminds us to put seeking Allah’s pleasure at the center of our lives and let that purpose shape who we become. Through worship, truthfulness, patience, generosity, and remembering Allah, we build the character people see in us. We can develop our strengths while continuing to try in every part of worship, remembering that Allah offers forgiveness for our shortcomings. Gratitude in good times and patience in hardship give us a way forward, even when sadness remains. The khutbah also urges us to nurture faith in our children and community through steady care, learning, and our own example. When we talk about Islam, we should listen, begin with shared beliefs, and show its teachings through our actions.
- What is one choice tomorrow that you could make with pleasing Allah in mind?
- Who helps you understand Islam through their kindness or example, and what do they do?
- What could our family do each week to make learning about Islam welcoming and enjoyable?
