Why the Mahdi’s birth can be known
“We have no doubt that our Savior is already born.”
The khutbah argues that multiple Shia traditions establish the birth and existence of the Mahdi, while his promised justice offers hope and calls Muslims toward courage amid present oppression.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Introduces doubts about the Mahdi’s birth and accusations against his first deputy.
- Rejects the claim that Uthman bin Sa’id fabricated the Mahdi tradition to collect khums.
- Presents accounts from Kitab al-Ghayba describing the Mahdi’s birth and being shown to trusted companions.
- Explains how numerous individual reports can establish certainty alongside the distinction between khabarun wahid and mutawatir.
- Connects hope for the Mahdi’s return with contemporary violence and failures of world leadership.
- Calls for ghira, courage, steadfastness, and trust in Allah while promising to address further objections next week.
In the khateeb's words
“when someone accuses us of something it is their responsibility to furnish claims it's not our responsibility to try and prove every doubt or every claim that is made against us”
“However, our ulama say that yaqeen and certainty can also be established from khabarun wahid.”
“that we have no doubt that our Savior is already born. And our Savior is here and will return when Allah Azza wa Jal wants that to happen.”
“One of the applications of ghira that is a direct tradition from the Prophet, and I'm paraphrasing, is that when someone attacks your house, you are expected to stand up and defend your home.”
For the dinner table
Sheikh Jaffer began by reminding us to be conscious of Allah and live with piety. He answered accusations about the birth of the Mahdi by saying that those making accusations need to provide evidence. He shared accounts of the eleventh Imam’s aunt and companions seeing his son, and explained how many reports together support certainty in the twelfth Imam’s birth. In the second sermon, he remembered people facing hardship and strongly criticized Israeli military actions and world leaders’ responses. He connected hope for the Imam’s return with justice and equality, and prayed for courage, patience, and steadfast faith for those suffering.
- What could you say when someone repeats a rumor without evidence?
- What stood out to you about the accounts of people seeing the young Imam?
- What is one way our family could help someone who is being treated unfairly?
