Love Allah by living the Sunnah
“We have to incorporate and instill in our lives the reality of the meanings of the Qur'an and the Sunnah.”
The khutbah argues that sincere love of Allah and profession of faith are proven by learning and embodying the Prophet’s Sunnah in everyday decisions and obligations, rather than reducing it to a few rituals.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Opens by asking listeners how they would behave if the Prophet Muhammad visited them, establishing a reflective frame.
- Presents a hadith urging taqwa, obedience, and holding firmly to the Prophet’s Sunnah amid disagreement.
- Emphasizes the breadth of Prophetic and rightly guided caliphal practice, warning against debating while lacking knowledge of the Sunnah.
- Defines Sunnah through the Prophet’s sayings, actions, and tacit approvals, then challenges whether listeners’ lives reflect their professed faith.
- Uses the Qur’anic principle that love of Allah requires following the Prophet, including fulfilling obligations and applying guidance to conduct.
- Closes by urging reverence for Allah and faithful following of the Prophet.
In the khateeb's words
“However, in the midst or in spite of all these differences, wa alaykum bi sunnati. The standard is the sunnah of the prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.”
“We have to enact. We have to incorporate and instill in our lives the reality of the meanings of the Qur'an and the Sunnah.”
For the dinner table
The khateeb asked us to imagine the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, visiting our home and to think about what we would change. He reminded us that following the Sunnah reaches into our speech, habits, and decisions, beyond the extra prayers we offer. He encouraged us to learn what we do not know and to examine ourselves instead of becoming caught up in arguments. He connected love for Allah with following the Prophet’s example and fulfilling our obligations. As a family, we can help each other put the teachings of the Qur'an and Sunnah into practice in ordinary moments.
- If the Prophet Muhammad visited our home, what would you want him to see in how we treat each other?
- When you feel angry with someone, how could remembering the Prophet’s example shape your next words?
- What is one thing about the Prophet’s daily life you would like us to learn together?
