Repentance & taqwaFrom the masjid's own video, Oct 10, 2026.
Allah’s love grows through self-restraint
“A person may have many problems and yet become closer to Allah every day.”
In one sentence
Allah’s love is recognized not through worldly success but through the moral qualities He cultivates in believers, especially self-restraint, God-consciousness, repentance, purity, and patience.
The khutbah in 8 steps
- Opens with praise of Allah, the Prophet, and Ahl al-Bayt
- Asks how people can know whether Allah loves them
- Contrasts worldly success with inner spiritual growth
- Introduces eight qualities attributed to Imam Ja'far al-Sadiq
- Explains lowering the gaze and resisting private digital temptation
- Discusses fear of Allah alongside hope in His mercy
- Explains patience in hardship, obedience, and resisting sin
- Closes with supplications, Quran recitation, and Jumu'ah prayers
Try this week
Lower the gaze from forbidden images and content, especially on phones and social media.
Remember Allah when alone and close pages that threaten moral character.
Examine personal speech, patience, trustworthiness, jealousy, and willingness to help others.
Maintain prayer and responsibilities even when motivation is low.
When falling into sin, admit the mistake, repair any harm, and try again.
Ask Allah for perseverance when difficulties cannot immediately be removed.
Quotes
In the khateeb's words
“A person may face difficulties in life and still be growing spirituality A person may have many problems and yet become closer to Allah every day”
“Faith means that we do not avoid sin only because people are watching us We remember Allah that Allah also sees us when we are alone”
“Patience means that if we fall, we do not remain on the ground. We get up again and return to the right path.”
Talk about it at home
For the dinner table
The khutbah asked us to recognize Allah’s love through the character we build, not through money, comfort, or other people’s praise. It encouraged us to guard our eyes and hearts, especially when using screens privately. It also taught that fearing Allah should come with hope in His mercy, not despair. Patience means continuing good actions, resisting sin, and getting back up after mistakes. Each person can choose one quality to practice more intentionally this week.
- What is one private choice this week where remembering Allah could help you?
- Which kind of patience, hardship, obedience, or resisting sin, do you need most?
- When you make a mistake, what is one way to get back up and make things right?
