Healing comes through community and dhikr
“If you want to go far, go together.”
In one sentence
Drawing lessons from survivors of the Bosnian genocide, true richness is contentment of the soul, healing comes through community and dhikr, and every trial is meant to shape you for your return to Allah.
The khutbah in 7 steps
- Observation: Bosnian survivors who lost everything smile and greet genuinely while we who have everything complain
- Lesson 1: True richness (ghina) is richness of the soul, not possessions, hadith, Ibn Qayyim on gratitude, Surah an-Nahl 16:97 and Ibn Kathir on the 'good life'
- Story: the father who said 'we need everything but I'm happy with whatever Allah gives me'
- Lesson 2: the Srebrenica mother who constantly made dhikr and understood inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'oon, everyone belongs to Allah first
- Only Allah removes hardship; the poet's line about knocking on Allah's door; children and martyrs as people of Jannah
- Second khutbah: Bosnian communal life, working, eating, and suffering together; the African proverb; the danger of isolation (stray sheep for the wolf)
- Silence is wisdom (Luqman); the Prophet was quiet but present; final lesson: every trial made you who you are; closing duas
Try this week
Be content and show gratitude for what Allah has already given you instead of complaining
Make dhikr of Allah regularly, even silently in gatherings
If you are going through something, go to the masjid and stay with the community rather than isolating yourself
Be present for brothers and sisters in pain without making them feel bad for their struggle
Take care of someone else's need so Allah takes care of yours
Practice silence when speaking would bring harm; you can be together without talking
