Stay firm through hardship and prepare for Allah
“No matter what happens in life, prepare for that encounter the day that you meet Allah.”
Because every believer is certain to meet Allah, hardship should be understood as a test and answered by steadfastly holding to faith, fulfilling entrusted duties, and remaining united.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Contrasts hardship on the paths to worldly success and divine closeness.
- Uses Sufyan ibn Abdullah's hadith and Surah al-Inshiqaq 84:6 to call for steadfastness and preparation to meet Allah.
- Describes the Prophet's suffering at Aqaba and warns that lost worldly support must not lead to abandoning faith.
- Presents Uthman ibn Affan and Imam al-Nabulsi as examples of firmness under persecution.
- Explains that Islam, prayer, charity, Hajj, Ramadan, modesty, and blessings are trusts for which people are accountable.
- Closes with the examples of persecuted prophets and Musa's confidence in Allah, followed by prayers for unity, guidance, forgiveness, and steadfastness.
In the khateeb's words
“So no matter what happens in life, prepare for that encounter the day that you meet Allah.”
“Your only source of help other than Allah may also turn you down. Your only help may turn his or her back on you.”
“No flight will ever get to its own assigned altitude without going through turbulence. And no flight will ever land safely except by crashing and going through microbursts or also turbulence.”
“And if you have Allah with you, my sister, Almighty Allah will always guide you.”
For the dinner table
The khateeb reminded us that we will meet Allah and that our choices today help us prepare for that meeting. Following Allah’s guidance can be difficult, and he shared stories of prophets and believers who held firmly to their faith through hardship. He encouraged us to put our belief into practice and keep turning to Allah for guidance and help. Prayer, charity, and the blessings Allah gives us are trusts that we are responsible for caring for. He also reminded us of forgiveness and ended by praying for united hearts, strong faith, and the ability to guide our families toward good.
- What is one way you could put your faith into action tomorrow?
- When something feels hard, what helps you remember Allah and keep doing good?
- What could we do this week to bring our family closer together?
