Raise children with the Prophet's gentle example
“Discipline with love is infinitely stronger than discipline with force and a loud voice.”
In one sentence
Muslim parents should raise children by following the Prophet Muhammad's three-fold prophetic methodology of honoring the fitra, modeling companionship, and building gentle habits through affection, patience, validation, and trust rather than force or shame.
The khutbah in 8 steps
- The speaker introduces his personal motivation as a father and notes that the civilian, social dimension of the Prophet's life is often overlooked
- He cites Surah Al-A'zaab to establish that the Prophet is an excellent pattern of conduct in every area of life, including parenting
- He presents Dr. Hisham al-Awadi's three templates: fitra, companionship and resemblance, and habit building
- He illustrates physical affection and warmth through the grandson, Abu Ma'adurah, and the warning that whoever does not show mercy will not be shown mercy
- He shows patience and emotional validation through the stories of the grandson climbing on the Prophet's back in sujood and Abu Umair grieving his pet bird
- He explains correcting misbehavior by addressing root causes, as with Rafi Ibn Amar throwing stones because he was hungry
- He builds the case for dignity, safe space, and confidence through the drink with Ibn Abbas, greeting children, and the young man asking about zina
- He closes with five practical action items: hug and validate, let them play, find root causes, be a safe space for mistakes, and empower them to lead
Try this week
When a tantrum begins, offer a strong hug, place a hand on the child's chest, kiss the forehead, rub the cheek, smile, listen, and validate the feeling
Let children play and make noise in the masjid rather than treating them as burdens
Address misbehavior by investigating its root cause and understanding each child's unique personality
Be a safe space for children's mistakes instead of exploding in anger or raising the voice
Empower children to lead by giving them real responsibility and patiently letting them take the first step
Quotes
