The shahada must shape daily life
“Belief is not something that just settles inside of the heart.”
Saying la ilaha illallah requires knowledge, certainty, acceptance, submission, sincerity, truthfulness, and love expressed through daily conduct.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Explains that the shahada carries obligations beyond merely pronouncing its words.
- Uses the hadith of the 99 scrolls and the shahada card to illustrate the statement’s weight.
- Introduces seven conditions of la ilaha illallah: knowledge, certainty, acceptance, submission, truthfulness, sincerity, and love.
- Develops knowledge, certainty, acceptance, and submission through Quranic and prophetic examples.
- Urges listeners to pursue Islamic knowledge through a year-end goal, aqeedah classes, and regular mosque attendance.
- Closes with a brief fundraiser reminder, prayers for struggling community members, and encouragement to spread salam and goodwill.
In the khateeb's words
“But my brothers and sisters la ilaha illallah was never just for a person to fulfill these things. It is complete submission to Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala.”
“Belief is not something that just settles inside of the heart. But it is something that starts there and then you see it on the body parts and you see it on the tongue of a person.”
For the dinner table
The khutbah taught that saying la ilaha illallah is not just repeating words; it means knowing Allah, being certain, accepting the truth, submitting to Him, and growing in sincerity, truthfulness, and love. The imam used the image of a key with teeth to explain that the shahada opens the way to Jannah when its conditions are lived out. He reminded us that faith begins in the heart but should appear in our actions and speech. He encouraged everyone to make a plan to learn more about Allah, attend the Sunday aqeedah class and mosque lessons, and keep returning to the masjid. He also asked us to spread salam, avoid ill feelings, want good for one another, and make dua for people who may be carrying hidden hardships.
- What does the shahada ask us to do beyond saying the words?
- How can our family make more time for learning about Allah?
- How can we show khair to someone who may be struggling quietly?
