Faith matters more than wealth and status
“We will never exchange this way of life for anything else.”
True faith means valuing one's relationship with Allah and remaining committed to Islam above wealth, comfort, status, and social approval, as exemplified by Mus'ab ibn Umayr.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Encourages gratitude for safety, warmth, and everyday blessings.
- Introduces Mus'ab ibn Umayr's wealth, status, beauty, and spiritual emptiness.
- Describes his conversion to Islam and willingness to sacrifice wealth and reputation.
- Uses his relationship with his disbelieving brother to discuss Islamic brotherhood despite disagreement.
- Recounts Mus'ab's leadership and martyrdom at Badr and Uhud, emphasizing the companions' sacrifice for the Quran.
- Concludes with Surah al-Ahzab 23 and a call to remain committed to Islam until death.
In the khateeb's words
“But it will never equal the experience and satisfaction that a believer finds in one sajda.”
“Nothing in this world will give us what we find in this deen, in this path.”
“We will never exchange this way of life for anything else.”
For the dinner table
Today’s khutbah reminded us to thank Allah for everyday blessings, like a warm home, hot water, and a safe journey to prayer. The khateeb told the story of Mus'ab ibn Umayr, a wealthy and admired young man who still felt something was missing before finding fulfillment in Islam. Mus'ab gave up his wealth for his faith and remained committed through poverty, opposition, and his service as a flag bearer. His story invites us to value our relationship with Allah more deeply and to recognize that comfort can also be a test. We were encouraged to care for one another through disagreements, let the Quran guide our daily lives, and stay faithful to Allah through hardship.
- What is one ordinary blessing you noticed today, and how could you show gratitude for it?
- What part of Mus'ab’s commitment to his faith stood out to you, and why?
- How can you show someone you care about them when you disagree?
