Patience and gratitude shape a believer's life
“A time of patience and a time of gratitude.”
A believer’s life alternates between patience during tests and gratitude for blessings, and practicing both with trust in Allah brings relief, strength, and responsible empowerment.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Trials are an established part of human life and reveal our limitations.
- The stories of prophets show that patience precedes empowerment.
- Believers should respond to hardship with patience, prayer, and certainty.
- Blessings require gratitude expressed through worship, prayer, zakat, and promoting good.
- The believer’s two enduring states are patience and gratitude.
- The khutbah closes by urging reliance on Allah’s knowledge and surrender to His wisdom.
In the khateeb's words
“Every ni'ma in which Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala has given you is something that you have to look after”
“there is no other state for the believer these are the only two that you should practice throughout your life a time of patience and a time of gratitude”
For the dinner table
Today’s khutbah reminded us that everyone faces tests, and each person’s struggles are different. The prophets faced hardships too, and the khateeb pointed to Yusuf’s story as an example of patience through repeated difficulties. He explained that a believer’s life is between patience and gratitude: staying patient in hardship and thanking Allah for blessings. Gratitude includes our hearts, words, and actions, such as prayer, giving, and encouraging good. Even when life is hard, we can notice blessings and trust Allah’s knowledge when we cannot yet understand what is happening.
- What part of Yusuf’s story helps you think about handling a difficult day?
- What blessing could you thank Allah for through something you do tomorrow?
- How could our family help someone who is going through a different kind of test than ours?
