Repentance & taqwaFrom the masjid's own video, May 8, 2026.
Return to Allah after every sin
“Hold yourself accountable before you are accounted for.”
In one sentence
Because everyone sins, believers should continually return to Allah through sincere repentance, self-accountability, good deeds, and excellent treatment of others.
The khutbah in 5 steps
- A story of Musa and a repentant hidden sinner illustrates Allah’s mercy and the communal effects of repentance.
- Qur’anic reminders and prophetic teachings call believers to maintain God-consciousness and prepare for judgment.
- Listeners are urged to respond to mistakes with righteous deeds, good character, and mutual reminders within the ummah.
- Repentance requires intention, regret, and commitment, and must continue even after repeated failure.
- The practical homework is to reject despair, review each day, seek forgiveness, make istighfar, and ask Allah for help.
Try this week
Intend sincerely not to return to the sin, feel regret, and commit to changing.
After making a mistake, immediately do a righteous deed.
Review your day every night and identify mistakes or people you may have hurt.
Ask forgiveness from anyone you offended and ask Allah for forgiveness.
Make frequent istighfar and ask Allah for tawfiq and support.
Quotes
In the khateeb's words
“Right away if you know you've done something wrong, go and do something righteous. Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala will take the hasana and allow it to erase the sayya.”
“Never look at the size of your sin. But remember that Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala is greater than all. And as long as we are living, we can return to Him subhanahu wa ta'ala.”
“Hold yourself accountable before you are accounted for. Every night before you sleep, ask yourself, how did I do today?”
Talk about it at home
For the dinner table
Today’s khutbah reminded us that everyone makes mistakes, but the best people are those who return to Allah. Repentance means intending to leave the sin, feeling sincere regret, and committing to do better. If we fall again, we should repent again and never give up on Allah’s mercy. We can review our day each night, apologize to people we hurt, and ask Allah for forgiveness. The goal is to stay aware of Allah and treat other people with excellent character.
- What is one good deed you could do quickly after making a mistake?
- How could we check our day tonight and repair a hurt we caused?
- What helps you remember Allah when nobody else is watching?
