Halal eating protects body and soul
“As Muslims, we have to be very intentional with what we eat.”
In one sentence
The Prophet Muhammad's teachings on halal and tayyib eating, moderation, natural food, and regular fasting, are a divine system for bodily and spiritual health that modern science is only now confirming, and Muslims must return to it amid today's processed-food and addiction crises.
The khutbah in 7 steps
- Opening praise: Allah created, determined, and guided all things (Surah al-A'la)
- Islam cares for the body: Sharia eradicated alcohol from the ummah while addiction (alcohol, marijuana, opioids) is normalized today, even among Muslim youth
- Hadith of al-Nu'man ibn Bashir: halal is clear, haram is clear, doubtful matters lead to haram; what we consume shapes the heart
- Scrupulosity of the early generations: Imam al-Juwayni's father and Abu Bakr purging doubtful food
- Tayyib quality: the sunnah diet of dates, honey, grains; meat as a rare luxury (Umar's warning); the stomach as the worst vessel to fill
- Science catching up to the sunnah: fewer meals, delayed breakfast, intermittent fasting, gut health tied to mental health
- Closing: GMO and highly processed foods as shaitan's promise to alter Allah's creation; command to eat natural food
Try this week
Abstain from alcohol, marijuana, opioids, and all harmful or addictive substances
Avoid doubtful (mushtabih) food and verify that what you eat is halal in both source and acquisition
Eat less: limit meals to two rather than three and never fill the stomach
Fast regularly beyond Ramadan, Mondays and Thursdays and three days each month
Stop normalizing highly processed and packaged foods, especially cereals fed to children
Eat natural, unmodified food, what grandparents ate, what comes directly from the earth
Attend to gut health intentionally as a means of improving mood, clarity, and mental health

Quran 4:119Shaitan's threat to make people alter Allah's creation, applied to genetically modified and highly processed foods as a catastrophe correlating with cancer, obesity, and inflammation
