Hardship should turn us back to Allah
“When we face difficulty, we should say, alhamdulillah, Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam is giving us a chance to go back to Him.”
Hardship should drive believers to turn back to Allah, strengthen their iman, and trust that divine help and ease are near.
The khutbah in 5 steps
- The speaker frames personal, financial, mental, and global hardships as tests requiring renewed reliance on Allah.
- Iman is compared to protective clothing in a snowstorm: essential protection against the difficulties of dunya.
- Examples from Adam, Lut, Nuh, Yusuf, the Prophet Muhammad, and the early Muslims illustrate steadfastness through severe trials.
- The Prophet’s boycott, year of sorrow, and experience at Taif demonstrate perseverance despite persecution and rejection.
- Qur’anic promises of nearby help and ease lead to a final call to say alhamdulillah and take a step back toward Allah.
In the khateeb's words
“Yet, they stayed steadfast on Iman and Islam, and they kept turning back to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.”
“And our protection from this snowstorm is our Iman in Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.”
“So whenever we're facing something, any difficulty in our lives, any struggle, any pain, we shouldn't think, why is this happening to me?”
“So when we face difficulty, we should say, alhamdulillah, Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam is giving us a chance to go back to Him.”
For the dinner table
Today's khutbah reminded us that when life feels difficult, we can turn to Allah and seek closeness to Him. The khateeb compared life's struggles to a snowstorm and our iman to the warm clothing that protects us. He shared how the Prophet Muhammad and earlier Prophets faced painful hardships but remained faithful and kept turning to Allah. He encouraged us to say alhamdulillah during difficulty and see it as an opportunity to seek Allah's protection. He ended with a reassuring reminder that our Lord has not abandoned us.
- If iman is like a warm coat in a snowstorm, what helps you care for yours?
- Which example of the Prophets facing difficulty stayed with you, and why?
- How could our family help someone feel less alone during a hard week?
