Speak truthfully and verify what you share
“Do not treat speculation as a fact.”
Because the tongue and fingertips can lead to truth or sin, Muslims must practice taqwa by speaking truthfully, verifying information, and remaining silent when unsure.
The khutbah in 5 steps
- Defines taqwa as protecting oneself from sinful harm and introduces the tongue as both blessing and responsibility.
- Uses hadith to emphasize that speech can determine a person's path toward Paradise or Hellfire.
- Explains the virtues of truthfulness and the harms of lying, broken promises, rumors, and unverified religious claims.
- Warns against speaking without knowledge, especially attributing statements to Allah or Islam without learning or verification.
- Offers practical guidance: speak good or remain silent, verify sources, distinguish suspicion from certainty, and correct misinformation gently.
In the khateeb's words
“To have Taqwa of Allah , brothers and sisters, is a Goal for every Muslim. to increase in it.”
“It is that thing can define whether you will be going to paradise or hell. Yes, just your tongue.”
“That it is enough of a lie that a person just shares or just says whatever he hears.”
“Do not treat speculation as a fact. Especially when someone's reputation is on the line.”
For the dinner table
Imam Saad reminded us that taqwa means protecting ourselves from what harms our faith, and he focused on the tongue as a blessing and a responsibility. Our words can bring us closer to Paradise through truthfulness, or harm us through lies, gossip, broken promises, and unverified rumors. In a world of messages and social media, we should pause, check sources, distinguish facts from suspicion, and speak only what is good. If we find misinformation, we should correct it gently and with good manners. The khutbah ended by asking Allah to protect our speech, our typing, and our communities from falsehood and division.
- What is one thing you could pause and verify before sharing this week?
- How can telling the truth still become hurtful or backbiting?
- What should we say when we do not know the answer?
