Knowledge awakens regret and repentance

Madina Masjid (ICCT) · Mohammed Makhlouf

“We have to actively pursue knowledge and we need to learn our religion because that is the thing that lights up our hearts from the darkness of our own sins.”

The khateeb, at 17:13

In one sentence

Sincere tawbah requires knowledge that awakens regret: knowing Allah is watching, recognizing how sins become normalized and multiply, and remembering that unchecked habits shape one's end, while Allah's mercy remains open to those who return.

For the dinner table

The khutbah teaches that sincere tawbah begins with understanding who Allah is, how sin grows, and where unchecked sin can lead. Allah's mercy remains open no matter how serious our mistakes are, as long as we turn to Him sincerely without associating partners with Him. Repeated sins can start to feel normal, so we should not trust that feeling or delay repentance. We should learn our religion, stop the sin, feel real regret, resolve not to return, and ask Allah for forgiveness often. The Prophet himself sought forgiveness repeatedly, showing us to keep returning to Allah.

  2. How can our family make it easier to learn, regret, and leave a sin?
  3. What helps you remember that Allah's mercy is bigger than your mistakes?
