Why believers should prepare for the Mahdi

“There are numerous accounts of the birth of the Mahdi.”

The khateeb, at 13:23

In one sentence

The khutbah argues that the Mahdi's existence is established through converging textual traditions and calls believers to prepare through patience, trust in God, solidarity with the oppressed, and beneficial conduct.

The khutbah in 6 steps

  1. Distinguishes intellectual proof for the need of an Imam from textual proof for the Mahdi's existence.
  2. Presents traditions identifying the Mahdi's lineage and his status as the ninth descendant of Imam Husayn.
  3. Uses reports from Jabir, Ahmad bin Ishaq, and Muhammad bin Uthman to describe the Mahdi's birth and concealment.
  4. Answers the objection that individual narrations are insufficient by comparing converging reports to evidence that it is raining.
  5. Connects the Mahdi discussion to patience, divine timing, and concern for Palestine and other oppressed people.
  6. Concludes with the perfumer hadith, urging believers to benefit others and maintain personal hygiene.

Today, Sheikh Jaffer explained why our tradition teaches that the Mahdi was born and went into concealment, drawing on reports about his lineage, birth, and the preparations for his absence. He compared these accounts to several different signs of rain that together support one conclusion. He reminded us that learning about the Mahdi should strengthen our hearts and help us prepare for him through our actions. Remembering people facing oppression, he asked Allah to give us patience, trust, and the strength to help them. He also shared the Prophet’s comparison of a believer to a perfumer: someone whose presence benefits others. As a family, we can put that lesson into practice through kindness, being trustworthy, and caring for our cleanliness and presentation.
