Read Quran and hadith through the Prophet’s life
The khutbah argues that Qur’anic verses and hadith must be understood together through the Prophet’s seerah, preventing isolated texts from being used to justify violence, oppression, or bullying.
The khutbah in 5 steps
- Introduces the principle that the Qur’an and authentic hadith interpret one another and cannot be isolated.
- Explains the distinction between qital, mutual fighting, and qatl, killing.
- Uses Hunayn and the treatment of Hawazin prisoners to show the Prophet’s concern for preserving human life.
- Addresses religious bullying, trauma, and judging Islam through the abusive behavior of individuals.
- Concludes by calling for holistic Islam, mercy, accountability, and prayers for communities facing war and crisis.
In the khateeb's words
“They cannot be isolated. They cannot be compartmentalized. They cannot be stripped away from Islamic academia in a vacuum.”
“It is the preservation of the human being that Rasulullah was after. But unfortunately, we misunderstand it.”
“And may He help us to use this deen to be merciful to one another, and not bully one another.”
For the dinner table
Today’s khutbah reminded us that Islam should not be judged from one isolated verse or hadith; the Qur’an, hadith, and the Prophet’s life must be understood together. The speaker explained that qital means fighting between parties, not automatically killing everyone. The story of Hunayn and Hawazin showed the Prophet seeking reconciliation and returning people, families, and property after they accepted Islam. We should never use religious language to bully our family or excuse harming others. Our practice should be merciful, careful, and faithful to the whole message of Islam.
- Why can it be dangerous to judge a whole religion from one sentence?
- How can we use faith to help someone feel safe instead of bullied?
- What does it mean to show mercy after winning a conflict?
