Repentance & taqwaFrom the masjid's own video, Sep 5, 2026.
Private choices reveal true sincerity
“Allah sees the sin you abandoned.”
In one sentence
A believer's true sincerity is measured by private conduct, so Muslims should resist hidden sin, practice sincere repentance, and cultivate unseen worship.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Frames true success as fearing Allah and restraining desire for the Day of Judgment.
- Argues that private conduct reveals faith more clearly than public reputation.
- Uses Quranic warnings and the Thawban hadith to distinguish hidden sin from sincere struggle.
- Explains muraqabah and contrasts Yusuf's resistance and the seven shaded people with private disobedience.
- Calls for sincere tawbah, abandoning triggers, and refusing despair of Allah's mercy.
- Closes with a plan to shut one private sin pathway and begin one hidden act of worship.
Try this week
Identify and close one private pathway to sin, such as an online account, app, conversation, habit, place, or risky time.
Begin one private act of worship, such as nightly Witr, Quran reading, dhikr, hidden charity, or private dua.
Make sincere tawbah by regretting the sin, stopping it, seeking forgiveness, and intending not to return.
If you fall again, return to Allah again rather than remaining comfortable in the sin.
Quotes
In the khateeb's words
“The issue and the danger is when the heart begins to say, as long as people do not know, it does not matter.”
“The believer may fall. You and I, we may fall. But the believer does not become comfortable lying on the ground. They get back up.”
“This should be comforting that Allah sees you. Because Allah sees when you resist, Allah sees when you are in pain, Allah sees when you walk away, Allah sees the sin you abandoned even though nobody would have ever known.”
Talk about it at home
For the dinner table
Today's khutbah reminded us that our real character is revealed when no one else is watching. Allah knows our private sins, but He also sees every temptation we resist and every hidden act of worship. If we fall, we should repent, get back up, and keep returning to Allah instead of giving up. We can close one pathway that leads us to sin and begin one private practice such as Witr, Quran, dhikr, charity, or dua. The goal is for our private life to become sincere and better, not merely to look good in public.
- What is one private good deed you could start this week?
- What situations make it harder to remember that Allah sees us, and what could help?
- Why might hidden worship be especially sincere?
