True repentance means stopping and making amends
“You leave your job, your house, your business, and you come here to charge your heart from Friday to Friday.”
Sincere repentance (tawbah) to Allah requires stopping the sin, feeling remorse, resolving never to return, and restoring wronged people's rights, and Allah's mercy accepts it no matter how great the sin.
The khutbah in 8 steps
- Opening praise and Quranic call to sincere repentance (tawbah nasuh)
- Friday-to-Friday worship recharges the heart and brings forgiveness
- The three conditions of tawbah: stop the sin, feel remorse, resolve never to return
- Fourth condition: return wronged rights and property to their owners, Muslim or non-Muslim
- Tawbah must be for Allah alone, not from fear of disease or harm (drinker, adultery, smoking examples)
- The five impossible conditions a shaykh gave to show sinning against Allah is absurd
- Hadith of the man who killed 99 (then 100) souls: Allah's mercy covers even the greatest sins
- Closing duas, iqamah, and prayer
In the khateeb's words
“But we come here, you leave your job, your house, your business, and you come here to charge your heart from Friday to Friday.”
“If you make a mistake, the first condition in the tawbah you stop doing it.”
“If you're making tawbah, you have to bring what you take to him.”
“This is not tawbah. Allah. He not gonna accept this one. Because you repents to Allah.”
For the dinner table
Today the khateeb reminded us that Jumu'ah is a short but precious time, we leave our work and homes to recharge our hearts, and the worship between one Friday and the next carries Allah's forgiveness. He taught us about tawbah, sincere repentance, and its conditions: first, stop the wrong action right away; second, truly feel sorry for what happened in the past; and third, make a firm decision never to go back to it. He added a fourth condition many people avoid because it is hard, returning the rights of others, whether money, property, or repairing something we said about someone, Muslim or not. He warned that repentance must be for Allah alone, not out of fear of illness or harm, like a person who quits drinking only because the doctor scared him, that is not tawbah. And he closed with hope: Allah's mercy is vast, and even the man who killed ninety-nine people was shown the door to forgiveness when he turned to Allah sincerely and sought better company.
- The imam said Jumu'ah recharges our hearts, what's one thing that 'charges' your heart and one thing that drains it?
- If you could undo one mistake this week and make it right, what would you do?
- Why do you think saying sorry to Allah isn't enough if we still owe something to another person?
