Guidance requires learning and sincere effort
“If you have true intention with Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala Allah gives you what you want.”
The greatest request in al-Fatihah is guidance to the straight path, which requires learning the Prophet’s way, acting with sincere intention and determination, maintaining heart presence, showing gratitude, and continually asking Allah for steadfastness.
The khutbah in 5 steps
- Distinguishes the Prophet’s role as teacher and example from Allah’s role in granting the ability to follow and remain guided.
- Describes stages of guidance, including escaping arrogance and ignorance, gaining basic religious knowledge, awakening from heedlessness, developing will and determination, and cultivating heart presence.
- Warns against blindly copying family practices, neglecting essential knowledge, and collapsing after reaching spiritual progress.
- Encourages regular Quran, dhikr, night prayer, fasting, charity, sincere intention, and dua when illness or age limits one’s actions.
- Concludes with stories emphasizing gratitude for Allah’s selection and blessings, followed by prayers for steadfastness.
In the khateeb's words
“your father versus Muhammad alayhi salatu wa salam your father versus what Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala loves”
“if you have true intention with Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala Allah gives you what you want”
“one step closer to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala is worth gratefulness day and night”
For the dinner table
The khutbah teaches that we ask Allah for the straight path every day in Surah al-Fatihah. Knowing what is right is important, but we also need Allah’s help to practice it with sincerity, determination, and a present heart. We should learn the basics of prayer and daily Islamic conduct instead of following habits simply because they are familiar. Even when sickness or age prevents an act, sincere intention still matters. Every day is another opportunity to become better, so we should be grateful and ask Allah to keep us steadfast.
- What is one good habit you want to move from knowing about into actually doing?
- How can our family help one another learn and follow the Sunnah?
- What blessing from Allah do you sometimes take for granted?
