Patience & trialsFrom the masjid's own video, Jul 27, 2026.

Patience is tested at the first strike

“The greatest reward comes in the greatest trials.”

The khateeb, at 1:47

In one sentence

Trials are a sign of Allah's love, and the believer's way through them is sabr, patience at the first strike of calamity, patience in obedience and in avoiding sin, joined with husn al-dhann, holding good thoughts of Allah, for which Allah promises His aid and an unimaginable reward.

The khutbah in 8 steps

  1. Opening hadith (Anas ibn Malik): the greatest reward comes with the greatest trial; Allah tests those He loves
  2. The prophets were tested most severely (ashaddu al-nas bala' al-anbiya), each according to his iman
  3. Allah commands patience: Quranic verses on sabr (46:35, 3:200, 2:177, 2:153, 39:10) and its rewards in this life and the next
  4. Story of Yusuf (AS): taqwa plus patience means deeds never go to vain
  5. Hadith of the grieving woman: true patience is at the first moment the calamity strikes
  6. Hadith of the believer's affair (Muslim): every state is good for the believer, gratitude in ease, patience in hardship
  7. Ibn al-Qayyim's three types of patience: upon obedience, away from prohibitions, upon Allah's decree
  8. Second khutbah: hadith qudsi 'I am as My servant thinks of Me', good thoughts of Allah, exemplified by the Prophet and Abu Bakr in the cave; close with application and du'a
Try this week
Control your reaction at the very first moment a calamity hits, before acting on emotion or ego
Respond to hardship by saying 'inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un' and accepting Allah's decree
Hold good thoughts of Allah when tested instead of asking 'why me', trusting He will make a way out
Persist in consistent worship, praying (including in the masjid), fasting, and paying zakah on time, as a form of patience upon obedience
Hold your tongue and stay away from what Allah prohibited, even in times of ease
Turn trials into increased worship: make du'a, seek sound advice, and fix what is between you and Allah
