Allah’s wisdom makes hardship a test
“Allah wants something so good for me that I don't see it right now.”
Life is a divinely designed test in both hardship and blessing, and believers find peace by responding with gratitude, patience, trust in Allah’s wisdom, belief in destiny, and tawakkul.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Life and death are created to test the quality of our deeds, not to provide constant comfort.
- Tests include calamity, fear, hunger, relationships, wealth, health, children, and other blessings.
- Patience, praise, and saying “Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un” bring mercy and reward during hardship.
- Qarun illustrates the hidden test of attributing success to personal achievement instead of Allah.
- Believers should expect good from Allah, accept qadr, and avoid regretful “I could have” thinking.
- Tawakkul and dua, illustrated through Musa, help believers face fear and receive peace from Allah.
In the khateeb's words
“It is meant to be a life of test And the test can take many different shapes and forms All described in the Quran”
“Allah wants Something so good For me That I don't See it right now”
“It could not have been Any different No matter how big or small it is”
“Allah is one of the names As-salam He is the source of peace He is the one Who will give you peace In your heart”
For the dinner table
Today the khateeb reminded us that Allah created life and death to test us, and that this world was never meant to be perfectly easy. Allah tests us with hard things like fear, hunger and loss, and also with good things like health, money and family. When something hard happens, we should say 'Alhamdulillah' and 'Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un', and in a hadith Allah promises a palace in Jannah called the House of Praise for people who do this. He also warned us not to be like Qarun, who thought all his wealth came only from his own cleverness, because everything good we have comes from Allah. Finally, he gave us three tools for finding peace: always expect the best from Allah, believe that what happened could not have happened any other way, and put our trust in Allah the way Musa did at the sea, even when we still feel scared.
- What is one good thing in your life that could also be a test from Allah, and how can you be grateful for it?
- When something small goes wrong, like spilling a drink or missing the bus, what could you say instead of 'I should have…'?
- Musa's people were scared but still said 'we trust Allah.' When is a time you could do the same?
