Use life's blessings before they are gone

“Something that you take for granted on Monday might not be there on Tuesday.”

The khateeb, at 1:03

In one sentence

Because youth, health, wealth, free time, and life itself are fleeting blessings that can vanish without warning, believers, especially the young, must seize them now in worship and wise choices before death makes return impossible.

The khutbah in 8 steps

  1. Hadith of the five-before-five, with a word study of 'ightinam' (seizing what is easily available, like sheep or war booty)
  2. Emphasis on the first blessing: your youth before old age
  3. Day of Judgment scene: the sun drawn within a mile, people submerged in sweat by their deeds, versus the seven shaded categories
  4. Mus'ab ibn Umair as the exemplar youth: from Makkah's most pampered young man to a martyr shrouded in a single sheet
  5. Parenting guidance: Ali's three phases (love, teaching, friendship), don't compare kids, don't rerun your own upbringing
  6. Why the youth-in-worship category is earned: each young person must still choose, as every Quranic wisdom-verse addresses youth (per Ibn Abbas)
  7. Young people should find mentors and scholars; the remaining four blessings reviewed; death is certain for all
  8. Close: actions are judged by their endings, the 'mamba mentality' mistake of assuming more time, al-Shafi'i's life-as-one-moment, then du'a
Try this week
Take advantage of youth, health, wealth, and free time now, before they are gone
Give young children love and attention rather than worrying about material luxuries
Model respectful speech between parents and monitor what children watch, because kids imitate both
Shift to friendship with children after about age 14 and respond without harsh judgment so they keep confiding in you
Never compare siblings; build a custom parenting approach for each child
Young people should actively choose worship themselves and seek out mentors and scholars for life and spiritual guidance
Make your move for jannah now instead of assuming you can do it later
