Repentance & taqwaFrom the masjid's own video, Jul 3, 2026.
True freedom comes from serving Allah
“The moment we become true slaves of Allah, we stop being slaves of everything else.”
In one sentence
True freedom is not doing whatever one wants but becoming devoted to Allah, which liberates the heart from money, desires, status, and other false masters.
The khutbah in 5 steps
- Defines true freedom as freedom of the heart, not merely the body or nation.
- Uses the hadith about slaves of money and luxury to distinguish owning wealth from being ruled by it.
- Explains that desires, culture, status, entertainment, and social media can become false masters.
- Presents Iyyaka na'budu wa iyyaka nasta'in as the believer's declaration of independence and dependence on Allah.
- Closes with self-examination, repentance, obedience, and prayer for freedom from worldly attachments.
Try this week

Ask Allah daily with the supplication beginning Ya Hayyu Ya Qayyum to set all affairs right and not leave you to yourself.
Use worldly means such as work, doctors, family, and friends while relying ultimately on Allah.
Practice saying no to shaytan, temptation, arrogance, greed, jealousy, and sinful desires.
Make Allah's obedience beloved and sin hateful, and act on what was heard.

Quotes
In the khateeb's words
“Islam teaches us something so profound The greatest prison that a person can be captive in Is not the prison of the body It is the prison of the heart”
“The moment we become true slaves of Allah We stop being slaves of everything else”
“The world says freedom means I can do whatever I want But a true believer says And declares freedom is My desires don't control me”
“Because whatever Controls our hearts Controls our lives And whatever controls our lives Has become our master”
Talk about it at home
For the dinner table
The khutbah reminds us that freedom is more than having choices or possessions. A person can look successful while being controlled by money, popularity, entertainment, or desires. Real freedom comes from worshipping Allah alone and relying on Him while still using the ordinary means He provides. We should examine what controls our hearts, resist sin and temptation, and ask Allah to make obedience beloved to us.
- What is one thing that can quietly become too important in our hearts?
- What could saying no to a desire for Allah look like this week?
- Why do Muslims ask Allah for help even when they are already trying their best?
