Ramadan calls for faith and responsibility
“You should be inside the masjid before Imam.”
The khutbah teaches that believers should approach Ramadan and Jumu'ah with sincere faith, fulfill Allah's obligations and other people's rights, and attend early while serving the mosque community.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Explains Ramadan fasting obligations, including make-up fasts for temporary illness, pregnancy, travel, breastfeeding, and fidyah for permanent inability.
- Describes sincere fasting and night prayer as means of forgiveness, while stressing repentance for major sins and restitution of others' rights.
- Explains the Jumu'ah hadith that rewards decrease by arrival hour, ending when the imam comes out.
- Urges worshippers to enter the masjid before the imam rather than treat Jumu'ah like ordinary Zuhr.
- Announces Ramadan volunteer needs, asks congregants to thank parking volunteers, and mentions iftar donations and weekly classes.
- Concludes with supplications for the deceased, the sick, lawful work, families, protection, and a good ending.
In the khateeb's words
“if I owe somebody money no no no that's not for you know forgivable because these are the rights of human rights of other creation of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala”
“please, you should be inside the masjid before Imam. Then you will get full reward.”
For the dinner table
The khutbah reminded us that Ramadan fasting is an obligation, with allowances for temporary illness and other circumstances. Those who cannot ever fast may give fidyah, while everyone should worship sincerely and seek Allah's forgiveness. Forgiveness does not remove our responsibility to repay debts or repair harm done to others. We were also encouraged to arrive early for Jumu'ah, thank mosque volunteers, and serve the community during Ramadan. The khutbah ended with prayers for healing, provision, families, protection, and a good ending.
- What does it mean to worship Allah sincerely rather than for reputation?
- How can we arrive early for Jumu'ah and help others feel welcome?
- Who could we thank or serve at the mosque this Ramadan?
