Purify your soul through daily practice
“You can't just purify your soul once and then leave it.”
True success comes from continually purifying and cultivating the soul through remembrance, repentance, disciplined inputs, Quran, and sincere good deeds rather than leaving the soul on autopilot.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Explains Surah al-Shams’ oaths and the nafs’s fitrah and moral awareness.
- Contrasts zakkaha, purifying and cultivating, with dassaha, burying and neglecting the soul.
- Uses Surah al-Hadid to examine whether hearts respond to Allah’s remembrance.
- Explains how sin marks the heart and repentance polishes it, reframing guilt as a mercy.
- Gives daily practices including istighfar, Quran, righteous company, sincere deeds, and guarding the senses.
- Closes with supplication for purified hearts and mercy for suffering people worldwide.
In the khateeb's words
“do not let yourself even go a day without reading the Quran or sincerely for the sake of Allah SWT doing one good action”
“the same Allah who made your soul is the same one who can help you purify it beware and be conscious of what you feed yourself”
“You can't just purify your soul once and then leave it This is a constant thing that you have to be doing every single day”
For the dinner table
The khutbah taught that our souls need daily care, just as a plant needs regular water and a healthy environment. Allah gives us a sense of right and wrong, but success comes from continually purifying and growing the soul. When sin makes us feel guilty, that feeling can become a lifeline that brings us back to Allah through repentance and istighfar. We can protect our hearts by reading Quran, remembering Allah, keeping good company, doing sincere good deeds, and being careful about what we watch and hear. The sermon ended by asking Allah to give us hearts that respond to His name and mercy for people suffering around the world.
- What is one thing you can do this week to give your heart a healthier environment?
- What kinds of things do your eyes and ears receive that make your heart feel closer to Allah?
- How can feeling sorry after a mistake help you make a better next choice?
