Hardship and blessing both test faith
“When you're in times of pain, you're patient, and when you're in times of goodness, you're grateful.”
Human emotions are valid tests from Allah, so believers should meet hardship with patience, blessings with gratitude, maintain worship, take responsibility, and seek Allah’s help rather than blame Him.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Validates grief and emotion through Yusuf, Ayyub, and the Prophet’s interrupted revelation.
- Explains that both hardship and blessing are tests requiring patience and gratitude.
- Contrasts Sulayman’s gratitude with Qarun’s claim that his wealth came from himself.
- Urges salah, adhkar, and tahajjud as nourishment for the soul.
- Warns against conditional worship and blaming Allah, emphasizing responsibility and reliance.
- Concludes with prayers for the deceased, Gaza, peace, guidance, and communal prayer.
In the khateeb's words
“But we've been also given this human emotion. And it's really important that we recognize that we have human emotions.”
“But know that Allah has made both of these situations your test. That when you're in times of pain, you're patient. And when you're in times of goodness, you're grateful.”
“So the key is when you're in time of blessing, you attach your success to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.”
“do not blame Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala for your problems. Ask Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala for His help.”
For the dinner table
Allah created us with minds and emotions, so grief is not a sign of weak faith. The khutbah teaches that both hardship and ease are tests: hardship calls for patience, while blessings call for gratitude. We should connect our success to Allah, keep salah, adhkar, and tahajjud as nourishment for the soul, and take personal responsibility. When life hurts, we should ask Allah for help rather than blame Him. We can also remember people suffering in Gaza and ask Allah for mercy, peace, and guidance.
- What is one difficult test where patience could help you?
- What is one blessing you can thank Allah for today?
- How can our family make salah feel like nourishment for the soul?
