Return to Allah before Ramadan ends
“We don't know if we're going to be around next Ramadan.”
As Ramadan enters its final days, Muslims should urgently turn to Allah through repentance, extra worship, blessings on the Prophet, service to parents, and practical support for the community.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Opens with a hadith describing three warnings: leaving Ramadan unforgiven, neglecting blessings on the Prophet, and failing to serve elderly parents.
- Explains that minor sins are erased by good deeds, while major sins require sincere tawbah involving repentance, resolution, and repairing harm.
- Urges extra night prayer, charity, feeding people, and support for building the masjid during the remaining days of Ramadan.
- Emphasizes serving aging parents through physical, financial, emotional, and respectful care, while modeling that respect for children.
- Turns to the final ten nights and Laylat al-Qadr, encouraging prayer, supplication, guidance, steadfastness, and mercy for the ummah.
- Closes with reminders about zakat al-fitr, a community iftar, and supporting the masjid and its future community.
In the khateeb's words
“Every time we come to a Jum'ah, a class, a lesson, anything, we want to leave that place with something that we can do when we leave, right?”
“But we must do toba, which means that whatever major sin that we have done, we have moved away from that sin.”
“Watch what you say to your parents and how you respect them and take care of them. Look out for them.”
“We don't know if we're going to be around next Ramadan. A lot of people that were at Ramadan last year are not here this year.”
For the dinner table
Ramadan is almost over, so we should not let its last days pass without seeking Allah's forgiveness. The khutbah teaches us to do good deeds, make sincere tawbah, send blessings on the Prophet, and serve our parents with respect. We are encouraged to seek Laylat al-Qadr through prayer and du'a, asking for forgiveness, guidance, steadfast faith, and mercy for the ummah. We should also care for people in hardship, give zakat al-fitr before Eid, and support the masjid and community. The goal is to leave Ramadan changed, with good intentions turned into action.
- What good deed can we start today and keep doing after Ramadan?
- How can we show more care and respect to an older family member?
- What would you ask Allah for during the last nights of Ramadan?
