Students should work hard and trust Allah
“I worked hard, I sought help from Allah, then the end is in the hands of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.”
Students should pursue excellence in faith, studies, and other lawful strengths while seeking Allah’s help, staying connected to the Muslim community, and accepting setbacks as Allah’s decree.
The khutbah in 7 steps
- A new semester is an opportunity for students to begin again.
- The hadith of the strong believer calls for beneficial effort and resilience.
- Believers should pursue excellence in faith, education, careers, and other lawful strengths.
- Students should work hard, use campus resources, seek Allah’s help, and maintain prayer.
- Masjid connection and Muslim friendships support faith during formative college years.
- Setbacks should be met without regretful if-only thinking, following examples from Uhud and the Hijrah.
- The khutbah closes with prayers for a blessed and successful academic year.
In the khateeb's words
“Your talents, your skills, your IQ, your intelligence, your resources, your connections, your experience is not enough to make you successful.”
“Don't stay up the whole night studying for an exam and then sleep through Fajr and then expect Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala to grant you success.”
“As long as I did my part, I worked hard, I sought help from Allah, then the end is in the hands of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.”
For the dinner table
The khutbah begins by reminding students that a new semester is a chance to start fresh. It teaches that a strong believer seeks excellence in faith, studies, character, and other lawful parts of life, while knowing that Allah is the source of success. We should work hard, use available help, stay close to the masjid and Muslim friends, and keep our prayers, especially Fajr, part of our routine. If results disappoint us after sincere effort, we should not get trapped in “if only”; we can trust Allah’s decree and look for wisdom while continuing forward. May Allah bless students’ time and make their efforts beneficial.
- What is one area where you can replace mediocrity with sincere excellence?
- How can you balance studying hard with remembering Allah?
- What should you say or do after something does not go as planned?
