Sincere worship begins with a guarded heart
“The heart is tarnished by two matters, negligence and sin.”
The khutbah argues that sincere worship depends on guarding and purifying the ever-changing heart through repentance, seeking forgiveness, and continual remembrance of Allah, especially during the first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- The first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah are presented as an especially valuable time for good deeds and renewed connection with Allah.
- The heart constantly changes, so believers should guard against accepting harmful thoughts or beliefs.
- Allah evaluates people by their hearts and actions, making inner sincerity central to worship.
- Negligence and sin tarnish the heart, while repentance, seeking forgiveness, and remembrance polish it.
- Listeners are urged to practice daily dhikr, recite takbir, and use Fortress of the Muslim for duas.
- The khutbah closes with supplications for pure, steadfast hearts upon Allah's religion.
In the khateeb's words
“Our heart is our home, so we must protect our home and not allow any harm to reach it.”
“The heart is tarnished by two matters, negligence and sin. and it is polished by two matters. seeking forgiveness and the remembrance of Allah.”
“So if I were to ask you all to do two things, in these next days and throughout your life. Keep seeking forgiveness from Allah and let your lips stay moist with the remembrance of Allah Azza wa Jal.”
For the dinner table
Brother Nuh reminded us that the first ten days of Dhul Hijjah are a special opportunity to do good deeds and strengthen our connection with Allah. He encouraged us to worship sincerely and care for our hearts, which can change from moment to moment. He compared the heart to a home we should protect and explained that an unwanted thought is different from a belief we accept. Allah looks at our hearts and actions, rather than our appearance or wealth. Seeking forgiveness and remembering Allah help polish our hearts and bring them rest, so he encouraged us to make these daily habits and ask Allah to keep our hearts firm upon His religion.
- If your heart were a home, what would you want to welcome inside?
- What is one good deed you could do with a sincere intention this week?
- When could we make time as a family to remember Allah and ask His forgiveness?
