Ramadan should free us from inner idols

Quotes
In the khateeb's words
“But the most dangerous idols are indeed those idols that are not made out of stone but rather these idols are those idols that are built within ourselves.”
“If your raka'at increase or your ibadat increase in the month of Ramadan, but your humility does not, the idols within yourselves still stand.”
“The purpose was not hunger. It wasn't to just abstain from food and drink. The purpose was detachment. The hunger was a tool. And the goal was taqwa.”
Talk about it at home
For the dinner table
Ramadan is not only about being hungry or doing more acts of worship. It is meant to help us notice what controls us, our ego, desires, reputation, money, status, or need for praise, and turn our hearts back to Allah. Fasting, waking for Fajr, and connecting with the Qur’an train us to choose Allah over comfort. The real goal is taqwa, sincerity, humility, and freedom from attachments that compete with Allah. Before Ramadan ends, each of us should identify one sin or attachment to confront and begin letting go.
- What is one thing that can control your attention or choices too much?
- How can fasting help us choose what is right over what feels comfortable?
- What does humility look like when someone is doing something religious or helpful?
