Seek knowledge with humility and patience
“Musa alayhi salam left everything to seek knowledge.”
True guidance comes from Allah and requires sincere trust, timely repentance, humble effort in seeking knowledge, and patience with wisdom we may not yet understand.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Revisits the virtue of reading Surah al-Kahf on Fridays as protection from confusion.
- Explains that guidance and honor come through taqwa, trust in Allah, and acceptance of His decree.
- Uses the companions of the cave to urge immediate repentance and leaving sinful comfort zones.
- Uses Musa's journey to al-Khidr to teach humility, sacrifice, patience, and persistent pursuit of knowledge.
- Warns against judging Quran, hadith, Gaza, or Sudan without adequate knowledge, urging restraint and truth-seeking.
- Closes with supplication and announcements about Masjid al-Aqsa lectures, membership, donations, parking, and the food drive.
In the khateeb's words
“so do something as soon as possible wallahi don't delay your repentance if you are doing something bad repent give up right now not later not tomorrow”
“if you own nothing you should cry over nothing because you do not own anything the true owner is Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala”
“musa alayhi salam left everything to seek knowledge he didn't decide to stay home bring me this teacher”
“if you don't have knowledge respect your ignorance respect your ignorance sometimes and make dua for those people who are sacrificing everything for knowledge”
For the dinner table
Today the khateeb reminded us that Allah’s guidance calls for effort, including reading Surat al-Kahf with understanding. He described the young people of the cave as examples of faith and courage who acted without putting things off. He urged us to turn back to Allah and make good changes today, because tomorrow is not guaranteed. Through Musa’s journey to seek knowledge, he emphasized humility, effort, and respect for teachers who have devoted their lives to learning. He also encouraged us to trust Allah when we cannot yet see the wisdom in events, and to be patient with people who are still learning.
- What is one good thing you have been putting off that you could begin today?
- How can Musa’s example help you listen and learn when something is difficult?
- What could you say kindly to someone who is struggling to understand a lesson about faith?
