Repent while Allah gives you time
“Allah has given you time to repent.”
Because life ends and every soul will answer to Allah, believers should repent with hope, obey Allah’s commands, and make a personal hijrah away from sin while learning from the sacrifices of the Prophet and Companions.
The khutbah in 7 steps
- The first sermon vividly imagines death, the grave, resurrection, judgment, and the consequences of an unprepared life.
- It turns from fear to hope through Allah’s forgiveness, mercy, and the stories of the lost child and the repentant killer of 99.
- It closes with the promise of Paradise for those who sincerely repent and live faithfully.
- The second sermon introduces Muharram and the Hijri New Year as a time to reflect on sacred time and Islamic history.
- It recounts the Hijrah, Musa’s deliverance, Abu Bakr’s insistence on obedience, and the sacrifices of the Companions.
- It expands Hijrah into leaving sins and forbidden acts, while highlighting the Ansar’s generosity.
- It urges listeners to study the Seerah and apply lessons of obedience, sacrifice, and trust in Allah.
In the khateeb's words
“If you're hearing this khutbah right now, Allah has given you time to repent.”
“When we fulfill the command of Allah, the help of Allah is with us.”
“The hijrah is not just physical moving from one place to another place.”
For the dinner table
One sermon reminded us that death, the grave, resurrection, and judgment are real, but Allah’s mercy remains open to anyone who turns back sincerely. The stories of the mother finding her child and the man who repented after killing 99 people teach us never to despair of forgiveness. The second sermon used Muharram and the Hijrah to show that obeying Allah can require courage, sacrifice, and trust when circumstances are frightening. Hijrah also means leaving sins and forbidden habits, while the Ansar show how to welcome and support others generously. We can respond by repenting, obeying Allah’s commands, studying the Seerah, and applying its lessons to our lives.
- What is one habit you would like to leave behind as your personal hijrah?
- What helps you remember Allah’s mercy when you feel ashamed or discouraged?
- How can our family show the Ansar’s generosity to someone who needs support?
