Why suffering calls us back to Allah

“Your perspective is very small; your perspective is very focused; there is much more that is going on behind the scenes that you are not able to see.”

The khateeb, at 15:28

In one sentence

Suffering does not disprove Allah’s mercy; it tests believers, reflects human responsibility and limited perspective, and should move us to study revelation, return to Allah, and act for justice.

For the dinner table

The khutbah says that suffering does not mean Allah is absent or unmerciful. Believers can ask hard questions, but they should ask them with faith, humility, and a desire to study the Qur’an and Sunnah. Since people have responsibility and free will, we are called to oppose injustice and take meaningful action. Our view is limited, so painful events may contain wisdom we cannot yet see. The khutbah ends by encouraging us to return to Allah, trust Him, and take the proper means in seeking justice and goodness.

  1. What is one difficult question you could explore with faith and humility?
  2. What is one small way our family can stand up for justice this week?
  3. How can trusting Allah and taking action work together?
